George Greasley

My 3xG/father George Greasley born Humberstone Leic. 1780/1 was a framework knitter then joined the 29th regiment of foot for 22 years then pensioned off with a Chelsea pension. He and his wife Ann born 1791 Wigston had children George, Sara, John and William for which I baptism records, I have not as yet managed to find any record of their marriage.

I have for many years been trying to find the parents of George Greasley, as I live hundreds of miles from Leicester and have been told that a lot of records have been lost for the Humberstone area I don't know if this is true or not so have not made the trip there.

I wonder if anyone could help me with this problem. Also his son George and his wife spent time in a workhouse in 1870/71 where my G/father was born but I can't find the Census for 1871 with them listed.

Any help would be gratefully welcomed.  Geoffrey Greasley  Mygen101@aol.com

DAFT
My Great Grandfather was William Henry 'Harry' Daft (born in Nottingham 1877) and Pheobe Whitby. They married in September 1899. Harry was the son of Thomas Daft (whitesmith) and Harriet Simpson(lacemaker),who married in 1855 in the Parish Church of St. Mary's, Nottingham.  They had 9 children, Sarah Ann, Herbert, Elizabeth, Harriet, Emma, Sophia, Ellen, Henry (my great grandfather) and Grace.  Thomas was the son of William Daft and Ann and was born on 10 February 1833 in Tyler Street, Nottingham. However, I have been unable to find him on the two census prior to his marriage in 1855, to enable me to verify who his parents were and take the family back further. I have also been unable to find a William and Ann on the census.  Can anyone help please?

BROWN
John Brown (my 3 x Great Grandfather) was born in about 1819 in Loughborough. He married Elizabeth Timson in the Parish Church in Shepshed on 8 June 1840. Elizabeth was born in 1820 in Shepshed. At the time of marriage John was also living in Shepshed. John and Elizabeth had 7 children, John, George (my 2 x Great Grandfather), Ann, Eliza(Elvira?), Sarah, William and Elizabeth. John's father was also John. I had thought that possibly John was born in Shepshed, but on all the census forms Elizabeth noted that she was born in Shepshed but John was always shown as Loughborough. Can anyone help to confirm the birth date and place of John Brown in about 1819, so that I can take my family back further?

JOHN MOORE

My 2nd great grandfather was John Moore and various census show that he was born in Burbage approx 1821.

His marriage certificate show that his father was Thomas Moore , occupation Farmer.

I have looked through the Parish records and can find no Baptism records for a John Moore 1821 with a father Thomas Moore in Burbage, Hinckley, and Barwell.

Can anyone help please?  Contact email   gmoore09@aol.com

THOMAS SHILTON

I am trying to find the parentage of my wife's Gt.gt.gt grandfather Thomas Shilton.

From census and other returns he always said he was born circa 1813 in Atherstone but we have not found his birth there nor in the surrounding parishes.

However in 1829, aged 16, the Overseers of the Poor in Sibson parish arranged for him to be apprenticed to John Biddle, baker, of Coleshill St.in Fazely. Unfortunately his father's name is not given in the documents and his mother is described as "Sarah Harris late Shilton". It is not clear whether Sarah was Mrs. or Miss Shilton when Thomas was born! I have not found a marriage of a Sarah Shilton to a Harris between 1813 and 1829 nor, with any certainty, the death of Sarah Harris.

I have not found any association with the parish of Sibson which made Sibson responsible for arranging Thomas' apprenticeship at the considerable cost of £8 7s.0d.

Despite the Overseers of the Poor arranging Thomas' apprenticeship I feel he came from a well off family.

a) He was made apprentice aged 16 - old for these days.

b) Immediatly he completed his apprenticeship, aged 21, he started his own bakery in Atherstone.

c) He moved with his family to Ratcliffe Culey where in 1839  he was listed as owner and occupier of a house and land assessed at 6s.4d. pa.

d) He had a good education - probably at Atherstone Grammar as did his sons.

Where did he get the money from?

JOSEPH LLOYD OF COLEORTON

I need some help in your area. I live in the USA and do not know a lot about your area of England. I ran across your website by accident while searching for somewhere to gather information about my Great Uncle, Joseph Lloyd who reportedly died in Coleorton in July 1940 at age 83. I do not know anything about his death. It may have been an auto accident, or just old age, I just do not know.  Old information I picked up a couple of years ago indicated that he lived in Ashby de la Zouch at the time of his death.  Many years ago our family lost contact with Joseph. I have been trying to get in touch with his family in England.  Joseph was my Grandmother’s Brother. He was married to Ann Marie Dawes on 6 Apr 1879 when they were members of the Church of England Parish in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, where they also lived with their 7 children. Two died as infants: John and George but I believe that five of their children lived to maturity:

Robert b. 1880 in Barnsley, York, England

James b. 1881 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

Thomas b. 1883 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

John b. 1885 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire died sometime between 1885 and 1901

Joseph b. 1887 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

George b. 1888 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire died prior to 1901

Minnie Elizabeth b.1901 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

Ann Marie Dawes, wife of Joseph Lloyd was b. 1855 in Sedgeley, Stafford, England but her parents, George Dawes and Elizabeth Dunno were both from Derbyshire. George Dawes was b. c.1824 in Alfreton, Derbyshire and his wife Elizabeth Dunno was b. c. 1824 in Ashover, Derbyshire.

I do not know if Ann, Joseph’s wife was living with Joseph in Ashby de la Zouch. It seems that his Vicar must have been contacted at the time of his death. If you could get me an address for a next of kin from parish records or where ever I would appreciate it very much. I know he had children and other extended family in the surrounding area in Derbyshire and possibly in Ashby de la Zouch, but I do not know exactly where or who they were. Even though his death occurred almost seventy years ago, any information, even old information would be helpful in trying to locate living members of his family.

Not knowing much about where or how to search for marriages for the five surviving children in England, I would appreciate any hints or suggestions about how to find where these children were married and to whom or who their children are and when they were born and where they are now?

SAMUEL TOWERS

I am looking for the parents of Samuel Towers b c1789. On some censuses it says he was born in Loughborough but on one it says Woodhouse.

Can anyone help?   Samantha Hussey samhuzz@yahoo.co.uk

If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome.

RAWLINGS FROM TEIGH TO AUSTRALIA

I am researching my maternal family history and have confirmed that my G-G-G-Grandparents set forth from Teigh to Australia in 1855.  He and his wife were married in the Parish Church of Teigh on June 11 1852 (I have a copy of their marriage certificate) and their first two children were born prior their departure.

Their names were Thomas Goodman RAWLINGS (RAWLIN/RAWLING/ROLLING) and Eliza PILMORE and their childrens names were Maryann & Susannah (I have a photo of these early ancestors).

My research has confirmed that both Thomas RAWLINGS & Eliza PILMORE's families lived and eventually passed away in Teigh. Thomas' parents were George (born Oakham) & Sarah RAWLINGS (maiden name unknown but born Melton Mowbray). Eliza's parents were William PILMORE and Anne (nee BAILEY).

I am interested in locating any records relating to these families and in particular, the maiden name of George's wife Sarah.

I have gained as much as I can from the Civil Registers and Census records and have also accessed church records for Teigh, Whissendine, Market Overton and Ashwell (on-line) where I have confirmed the families existance in Teigh and surrounds.

I am really interested in trying to locate a marriage record for George and Sarah and birth records for their children as all except the last one (Emma) were born prior to 1837.

My research so far has identified that in 1841 George and Sarah RAWLINGS were living in Teigh and had 1) Thomas Goodman b1829, 2) Rebecca b1831 3) William b1834 and Emma b1841(I am currently waiting on the birth certificate for Emma).  It is very possible that there were children born before Thomas but I don't know how to find this information.

I live in Australia and  am not sure where to look next with my search.  Any assistance, information or redirection elsewhere you may be able to provide would be extremely appreciated.

EDWARD FARDELL

I am from Melton Mowbray but now live in Warwickshire. I am trying to find the marriage of Edward Fardell b 1781 Waltham On The Wolds.  He Married a Mary b 1788 Donegal Island. I have looked at all the records I can think off, I have been doing FH for 27 years. Please can you tell me where to go now. I am not sure if they married in England or Ireland. I am unable to find anything on new family search.

BRIAN/BRYAN/BRYANT

I am trying to prove the death records for and locate the grave(s) of my gt gt gt grandparents and one of their sons and would appreciate any help / advice that you or your members could provide.

I have three deaths in the Uppingham district which appear to be my best lead thus far. I am hoping that the three can be found in one grave so providing some assurance(?) that it is indeed my family.

Thomas Brian / Bryan 1868 age 76 - 3Q Vol 7a Pg 212 - born between 1789 - 1792 in Oundle or Huntingdonshire according to census records. I have found a birth record in Liddington that seems to best fit so far and this person died in 1868 as shown above.

Martha Brian / Bryan nee Hopper - 1Q1856 age 60 - vol 7a pg 133 - born in Upton cum Coppingford between 1792 - 1796 according to census records.

Jabez (or Jacob) Brian / Bryan - 1Q1843 age 19 - vol 15 pg 50 - born in Huntingdonshire (most probably, Stibbington) on 2 June 1824, christened 24 Jan 1831 at the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, Peterborough (Thomas recorded as Briant).

Thomas & Martha were married at Upton cum Coppingford church on 29 April 1816. Going by the christening records for their children Thomas & Martha lived in Huntingdon, Stibbington, Peterborough & Stowe. I lose track of Thomas and Martha after the 1851 census were they are recorded as tollgate keepers in Stowe. If I am correct Martha died before the 1861 census. I have no record for Thomas in 1861 census apart from an initial TB at the workhouse in Oakham. Jabez I lose track of after the 1841 census where he was in Stibbington and recorded as Jacob.

The search seems more complicated by 1) our family changed surnames, eventually becoming Bryant and 2) the changing authorities - Leicestershire, Northamptonshire & Rutland! I am unclear where it lay in the mid-1800s, or which parishes it comprised (I have now those shown below).

As a general point I would appreciate contact from anyone researching the Brian / Bryan / Bryant families with connections in Oundle, Stibbington, Peterborough, Lincolnshire (Weston St Mary), Harborne, Keighley - I keep coming across these potential family connections but cannot prove them!

JAMES (JOHN) BURKE

I would like to trace descendants of James or John Burke, brothers of David (my great grandfather), believed to have been born in Ireland in the late 1830s/early 1840s.  My great grandfather was born in 1845, but the place is not known to me, and there is noone left in my family whom I could ask.  I assume that he too was born in Ireland since I cannot trace his birth here, and my hope is that the families of James or John Burke may hold the answer.   David married Sarah Walker, daughter of Charles, in Leicester in December 1865 and on his marriage certificate his father is given as Joseph Burke, schoolteacher.  I am unsure about his mother - possibly Mary.

WILLIAM FLAVELL

I am trying to find info on the parents of a William Flavell, born Loughborough, in Jan 1784. William's father was named William Flavell also, and his mother's name was Ann. This info I found on the bishop's transcripts from All Saints Church, Loughborough. I did not see any info on the senior William's birth, marriage or location of either. Anyone with any clues please contact me at mickflav@verizon.net. Thank you.

GRANT & PARKER

For some years now I have been “stuck” on finding and confirming Grant and Parker prior to the marriage of John Grant and Hannah Parker in1745.

I can find plenty of both Grant and Parker in the Exton and  Empingham area but am unable to establish a relationship. I f anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. If there are church registers available that I have not already seen that would be great.

SAMUEL HAMES

I live in Thailand and was wondering if you could assist me in my research. I recently made a discovery on my family tree of  a Samuel Hames who married Elizabeth Fox of Aylestone on 8 June 1682. Elizabeth Fox/Hames wasburied in Aylestone on 4/5/1708.

I believe that Samuel was born in the village before he migrated to work in Coventry where they settled down after getting married.

I am trying to establish confirmation of where Samuel was born. I have checked the IGI but have found nothing that matches, only a vague reference to him being born around 1657 in Aylestone without any obvious evidence.

I am particularly interested in any grave stone inscription of his wife who presumably was buried at St Andrews church to see if there are any clues. Would you be able to inform me as to whether there are many grave stones at this church going back 300+ years and even better whether any member

could check any grave stone inscriptions of the deceased with the name Hames including Elizabeth Fox/Hames since the IGI indicates quite a few in the village during the 1600s with the surname Hames.

ARTHUR EDWARD ASHTON

I’m trying to find out what happened to my Gt Uncle Arthur Edward Ashton, b. 14th Dec 1905, Great Bowden.  His parents were Harry Ashton and Susan Wilson.  My elderly mother and her sister believe he may have been called Ben by friends and family??  Both also think he was possibly a ‘black sheep’ and wasn’t talked about much – one rumour was that he was part of a gang who held up a pub in Kibworth and was caught, so possibly went to prison.  My mother thinks he may have died early in the 40s – but I can’t find any record for him other than his birth registration.

I live in Somerset now so it isn’t easy for me to visit the Leicestershire & Rutland Records office – has any of your members ever come across a raid on a Kibworth Pub?? Or may be able to point me in the right direction??Any help to solve this mystery would be gratefully received.

ROBERT LAUNDON ADKINSON

My research has lead me to a gentleman by the name of Robert Laundon Adkinson.  Through researching and using Kelly's directories I have found he had property at  1 Market Place and 10 Hotel Street, Leicester.  I understand that one of these properties was called Stilton House.  It washowever understood that he owned 8 Hotel street, however I have not been able to find any documentation that he did indeed own it.  Has any body done research or could tell me who I should contact for information about these properties?

RICHARD SHERRARD

My ancestors have been traced to Bridge in Kent but we do not know where they came from?  I have been told by a great uncle that he believes that the family were from Rutland and that in about 1780 Richard Sherrard with his wife Catherine, moved south after a dispute with Richard's family.  If there are any researchers who have come across a Richard Sherrard in the 1700's please could they contact me.

ELIZABETH HUSING

I have an ancestor, her married name was Elizabeth Husing, she was married to Claus Husing. They started having children in 1800 in Bermondsey, London. Elizabeth declares her place of birth on census records as Leicestershire. Her maiden name is unknown to me, however one of her children was called Barbara Bryan Husing.

Was Bryan her mothers maiden name ? Claus Husing was born in Germany abt. 1770.

Elizabeth never left the London area.

Any help would be much appreciated. Bob Roberts bobandjanet@btinternet.com

Reverend William Hardwick

I am researching my husband's family tree and know from the censuses of 1851 and 1861 and a family bible that his gt.gt. grandfather was a baptist minister living at the Bethesda Baptist chapel in Uppingham. Along with the family bible we have a photo album belonging to the Reverend Hardwick. Unfortunately, however, we do not know who many of the subjects are.

The reason that I am contacting yourselves, though, is that there are some photos of a "stately home" , on the back of which is the name of the photographer " Drake of Uppingham" I am attaching scans of these in case anyone out there can identify the house and thus solve a family mystery. The name Hardwick Hall, by the way, is the name by which the family has always referred to this building!

WILLIAM FOURACRE

I am researching my great grandfather and i think he may have run theWhite Lion pub in Oakham in 1912. His name was William Fouracre. I am certain a man by this name ran the pub  during these years as I have found details in a phone register.

So would you be able to point me in the right direction so that I canfind out some more information. Would landlords during this time in Oakham have had to have registered with the local authorities? Or do you know of a book about Oakham during 1900s which may include the White Lion/

MARY ELLEN GRIFFIN (nee SMITH)

The lady vanishes! We are trying to trace this daughter of George and Sarah Smith who was born in Wigston about 1877. We know of her husband (Fred - married 1896) and two sons (Stanley b 1896 and Archibald b 1898) but there is no trace of Mary after that last date. We cannot locate her in either of the later censuses or convincingly in the Marriage (a remarriage?) or Death indexes. Would also like to know of any background of the village of Anstey where the family lived after their marriage.

FOSTERS IN LEICESTERSHIRE

I live in Suffolk, and have been researching my family history of Foster for the last 10 years or so, mostly in Buckinghamshire. Until a few days ago, I was aware that one family member -  Oliver Foster, born in 1875 -  moved to Thorpe Satchville around 1900, but did not have any children, and died in 1922 (reg. at Melton Mowbray, but I have not applied for his death certificate).

Then a friend found several children on the 1911 census, but staying with relatives in Oxfordshire. I soon found possible marriages for the children in the 1920s, and possible grandchildren born up to 1938. Are you aware of anyone researching Foster, Spriggs or Roddis families in the Melton Mowbray area, please? I have just added some names to GenesReunited but that may not produce any replies.

As I have only a relatively recent family history in Leicestershire I have not yet  thought whether to join the LFHS, but it is worth checking for leads first.

In October I drove through Melton Mowbray, and on to Thorpe Satchville, and looked round the churchyard at nearby Twyford where several Thorpe residents are buried, but no Fosters were recorded on headstones. My hope is to locate a living relative, who might be able to give me more

information.

WILLIAM WRIGHT OF NORMANTON LE HEATH

My great/great/grandfather WIlliam Wright married Elizabeth Wright( b.Cuckney,Notts 1807) in Anston Sheffield 1828.They had three children together (Thomas,Rosanne,Charles).Sadly Elizabeth died around 1852.

The 1851 sensus indicates they were living in Thorpe Salvin, and William is deemed to be 44yrs of age, therfore would have been born in 1807,however his place of birth would appear to be in Normanton le Heath, although the census writing is unclear, but I feel sure it is correct. William was employed as an agricultural labourer.

I am hoping that this will link up to my predecessors that I know of that go back to the 1500s

Any help and advice would be most appreciated.
