ROBERT SMITH GRANT

I am interested to find out more about my Great Grandfather, Robert Smith Grant, who was fostered in Great Glen. He moved to Leicester, married and then lived in Ashbourne Street, Leicester (various addresses) from before 1890 until the 1920s when he moved to Spencefield Lane, with his wife Sarah Ann Tallis and some of his five sons. I know quite a bit about his life, something of a 'rags to riches' story, but am particularly interested in the nature of the work he did, at Broadbents in Spa Place on Humberstone Road from 1887 until 1945. Does anyone have photographs of Broadbents staff, from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century? Or perhaps you knew someone who knew about Robert Grant? Robert was also a mainstay of the Leicester French Circle, mentioned frequently in their records in the County Record Office, and ending up as an Honorary Vice President. But as a poor boy from a village school, where did he learn to speak such excellent French? He also appears to have hosted Belgian refugees during the Second World War. Does anyone have more information about them? Any information would be welcome.

I also have a second query, rather stranger:

'The direct male descendants of my mother’s family, the Grant family, are genetically ‘Anatolian' according to analysis by 'Britain’s DNA’. This is relatively unusual for UK residents, particularly in a family that was living in the small Leicestershire village of Great Glen. This ancestry appears to come from my unknown Great Great Grandfather, who would have been in the Midlands (perhaps Leicestershire or Shropshire) in January or February 1866, when he fathered a son by Elizabeth Grant, a young servant. I have looked at the Census for 1861 and 1871, and there are relatively few likely male contenders of the right age, with non-European surnames listed with birthplaces in what is now Turkey. There were some wealthy merchants based in London, who might possibly have travelled in England for pleasure, including the Turkish Ambassador and several members of his household. But does anyone have information on Turkish or Middle Eastern men likely to have been in the local area at this time? What were they doing here, and what happened to them afterwards?'

Thanks for your assistance, in anticipation,

Carolyn Roberts
