A surname index of 9,500 names published in the newspaper during and after World War 2. Some names are repeated in a later edition, with few entries at the start of the war but the momentum gathered pace as would be expected. Towards the end and continuing into 1946 there are long lists of returning prisoners of war.
Other events, usually under the heading of ‘Forces News’ were – ‘wounded’, ‘died’, ‘killed’, ‘drowned’, ‘survivor’, ‘missing’, ‘now safe’, ‘prisoner’, ‘freed and repatriated’. There were ‘reunions’ abroad and at home of family members and friends, plus of course, ‘awards’ such as ‘DFC’ and ‘mentioned in despatches’, or ‘Gained Wings’ generally in another country. There are pictures of men or groups ‘reading the Leicester Chronicle’, all over the world. Family group photographs might include service details but otherwise are indicated as, ‘serving in forces’. There are a few female entries.
Home addresses and relative’s details such as wives, parents and also friends are recorded in the index, if published in the newspaper. The Illustrated Leicester Chronicle can be viewed on microfilm at the Records Office of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, plus I understand it could be viewed online via a subscription.
