Our thanks to John Savage for his time and enthusiasm in coordinating and progressing this project, which he is continuing as there is a set of associated records called the School Age Registers which he is now doing for us.

Notes on the Leicester School Exemption Registers

The registers are the records of children leaving school in the Borough of Leicester, which later became the City of Leicester, that were part of the Leicester School Board and later the Leicester Education Committee.

The Exemption Registers run from 1892 to 1968 and cover 8 volumes. The first four volumes give the pupil’s name, leaving dates, and age, which are included in the index. Not included in the index but given in the registers is the name of the school and the standard that the pupil achieved, the last four volumes give the child’s birth date instead of the age, the birth dates have been included in the index up until 1920. Due to the restrictions of the Data Protection Act, no entries have been included on this CD with birth dates after 1920, however, the full information is available on microfiche in the Records Office for Leicestershire, Leicester, and Rutland (ROLLR) and the LRFHS Research Centre in Leicester, where a printed Index is also available. Up until December 1941, parents’ names are included in the registers. The last volume which runs from 1955-68 is under closure regulations in the ROLLR and cannot be included in the index.

The Index number is comprised of 3 parts, the first part is the ROLLR reference for the registers (30D73), the second is the volume number (/01), and the third is the fiche number (- 1) giving 30D73/01-1. This number should be quoted when making inquiries to the Records Office or LRFHS Research Centre along with the leaving date and the page number (where given).

Where forenames have been abbreviated in the register the name has been entered in full wherever possible. On some entries where there are two forenames, one name has been written over the other on the same line, and the ‘top’ name has been entered first but, in some instances, this may be incorrect so it would be advisable to consider the names in the reverse order. Normally when there are multiple forenames only the first two have been entered, with any further names only the initial has been entered, although if there is a name that might have been originally a surname it has been entered fully. Aliases or ‘otherwise known as’ have been entered in brackets in the forename column.

Acknowledgements

My thanks go to the many people who have helped in compiling this index. And, Zoe Boyer and Shirley Sanders, have transcribed numerous pages onto paper. To Margaret Howkins and Audrey Stevenson, who transcribed and put on to computer many of the fiches. Also to Mick Rawle, the Project Coordinator for his help and advice. And to the staff of the Records Office, who carried these huge volumes to and from their strong room during the time the work was being checked.

The Age Registers are in four volumes and these will be included at a later date.
