Description

This dataset contains a surname index of the Leicestershire Electoral Registers for the year 1931. Numbers amounted to 198,749 in the four Divisions of Leicestershire at that time. Several people lived in the County but voted elsewhere depending on where the boundaries were situated. Some voters have a ‘Business qualification’ so their abode is given. ‘Absent Voters’ away from home are also indicated.

Of course, it includes the women voters who became eligible to vote under the terms of the Representation of the People Act, 1928. Both men and women aged over 21 qualified as voters in Parliamentary Elections.

This index includes the town, village/hamlet, or voting place, street/road name, and Leicestershire Division (not the house name or number which would have involved typing each individual house address).

The original Electoral Registers are the property of Leicestershire County Council and can be viewed at the Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland Records Office. Details might also be viewed on subscription websites.
