Description
Militia Muster Rolls 1772 And 1792
(Lm4/1/1-5 And Lm4/2 – Leicester/Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office)
The 1757 Militia Act required Militia Regiments to be re-established in England and Wales and recruitment was organised by County. However, there were insufficient volunteers, so ballots were held. Chosen or lotted men aged 18-50 (to age 45 from 1762) who were not willing to serve in person could find a substitute.
The 1772 and 1792 A-Z lists show the names of the lotted men, their substitute (if applicable) and parish, although, in 1772 the Parishes in the County and Wards in Leicester Borough were grouped together into districts (village spellings as on original muster rolls). (388 and 564 names respectively).
Army Volunteers 1812 And 1813
(Lm3/4 Leicester/Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office)
The Leicestershire Regiment of Militia were stationed in Ireland in 1812 (Dublin) and 1813 (Enniscorthy) and 184 men volunteered to join the regular army.
The A-Z list shows the recruits name, age, regiment they chose to join, length of service (184 names).
Leicester Soldiers Who Fought At Waterloo 1815
(Qs31/1/56 Leicester/Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office)
Names, addresses and regiments – author unknown – transcription by Michael Billings plus one additional name submitted by Sandra Morgan.

Army Recruitment In Leicestershire 1886 To 1899
(22d63/85 Leicester/Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office)
The Leicestershire Regimental Recruitment Book records details of men who volunteered to join the regular army in Leicester/Leicestershire between October 1886 and February 1899.
The A-Z list shows the recruits name, age, occupation, religion, birth place, date of joining and name of Regiment (not necessarily the Leicestershire Regiment). The actual book (held at Leicester/ Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office) also lists details such as height, weight, hair colour, description and position of birth marks and tattoos, plus town where recruitment took place (5553 names).
All original documents (as quoted above) to be found at the Leicester/Leicestershire/Rutland Records Office.
