Description

This CD contains a surname index of just over 20,000 baptisms in the Whitwick/Coalville area. Some families lived in one parish and were baptised in another. They probably moved for work purposes.

The baptisms from three ancient parish churches of St James at Hugglescote, St Michael & All Angels, at Ravenstone and St John the Baptist at Whitwick are indexed from 1813. St George’s Church at Swannington was formerly a chapelry and known as ‘Whitwick St George’, this register dates from 1827. Christ Church at Coalville opened in 1840 (no ancient church or parish – the houses were situated along ‘Long Lane’). St Andrew’s Church at Thringstone was also formerly a chapelry and known as ‘Whitwick St Andrew’, it opened in 1862. St Mary’s Church at Snibston has baptisms from 1899.

The surname/baptism index is combined from the dates shown above – up to and including 1921 (with the exception of Swannington which finishes in 1874). As well as the names of parents, family abode and occupation of father, it includes any date of birth given. If mentioned by the vicar, the name of the father of an illegitimate child is included in the ‘notes column’.

The baptism registers can be viewed at the Records Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland (original registers and most are on microfiche). Local History and Historical Groups may also have access to some of these records.
