The Lay Subsidy was a Medieval tax that was levied between the 1300s and 1600s. Leicestershire has a coverage of villages in the series of six ‘Medieval Village’ books compiled by Mr George F Farnham.

Our index mentions 3697 names in 190 villages during the 1500s. The years 1524, 1525, 1543, 1545, 1546, 1552, 1571 and 1572 appear in the books. Some villages are grouped together and no other information is given apart from details such as ‘JNR’ for JUNIOR, ‘SNR’ for SENIOR and ‘WID’ for WIDOW.
