Description

Surname / Parents index for baptisms in the Leicester Borough from 1558 to 1837.

The information on this CD has been compiled from data previously used to produce separate surname / forename indexes of baptisms in each of the ancient churches of Leicester Borough (town). (See separate CD’s for the full registers to 1921).

The churches included are:

  • St Martin’s from 1558
  • St Nicholas’ from 1560
  • All Saints’ from 1575
  • St Mary’s/St Mary de Castro from 1600
  • St Margaret’s from 1615
  • St Leonard’s from 1682
  • St George’s from 1827.

This merged index includes baptisms from the beginning of the above parish registers to the end of June 1837 when General Registration commenced. The merged and re-sorted order of data is – SURNAME / PARENTS’ NAMES / YEAR / DATE / CHURCH IN LEICESTER / FORENAME OF BAPTISED / FICHE REFERENCE – approximately 80,000 entries.
Please note that lots of instances have emerged where names appear twice on the same register (perhaps by accident?) or on two different church registers on the same day, date and year. Some entries record the baptism of adults, teenagers or children (rather than new born babies), these can be verified as such by looking at the original records. Although the names of the parents are included in the index they might not necessarily be alive at the time of their child’s baptism and this applies particularly in the case of adult baptisms. However, the incumbents did not always record the baptisms in date order which can make it difficult to locate entries (on All Saints’ register for instance the illegitimate baptisms at one point are recorded completely separately to the legitimate ones). If it helps, a typed register order of entries for each church was included on the individual baptism index CDs.

We have not attempted a complete transcription and have not included any other details that appeared in the records. Care has been taken to produce accurate data but we recommend consultation of the original records, not only to confirm details but to reveal additional information that might be vital to your research.

The majority of the data was typed or proof-read by Sue Shore and Sandra Morgan. Thanks to Peter Cousins for producing the CD – Sue Shore 2010.
