Description
The index is of voters and tenants in Leicestershire towns, villages and the Borough of Leicester was recorded October 1833 & 1834.
The information here is taken from data microfilm 556 at the Leicestershire & Rutland Records Office (Ref QS63/3). Also included in the index are the voter’s abodes if different to their voting qualification addresses, a description of their qualification (such as house, land and whether freehold), together with various notes such as farm names, pubs, mills and manor houses etc.
At that time the County and Borough together were divided into two Divisions. The North Division contained the areas called Framland, East Goscote and West Goscote Hundreds. Whilst the South Division contained the Borough of Leicester, Gartree, Guthlaxton and Sparkenhoe Hundreds. The data on microfilm 556 is arranged accordingly in that order.
1833 – North Division had 3716 entries but this includes 2 duplicated voter numbers. Unfortunately, there was no return for Welby, Grimston, Halstead, Shoby or Tilton on the Hill. 1833 – South Division had 4151 entries but this includes 1 duplicated voter number. Unfortunately, there was no return for Foston or Glen Parva.
1834 – North Division had 3807 entries but this includes 1 duplicated voter number. Unfortunately, there was no return for Welby. 1834 – South Division had 4242 entries but there are 2 missing voters.
There were 7,867 voters in 1833 and 8,049 voters in 1834. The index contains the names of these 15,916 voters for the two years mentioned, in addition 4,526 tenant’s names are included. There is also a village index produced from the data and a separate tenants index.
