Description

Silver War Badge Indexes (WW1) For the Leicestershire Regiment & Yeomanry

The Surnames & Forenames Index (5,762 Entries) provides the following information:

  • Date of enlistment index (1887 to Dec 1919)
  • Date of discharge index (Aug 1914 to Dec 1919)
  • Regimental numbers & Silver War Badge numbers
  • Rank & Battalion (if given)
  • Reason for discharge

Silver War badges were issued to discharged soldiers from August 1914 to December 1919. The original lists are held under the reference WO329 (pieces 2958-3255) at The National Archives. King George V authorised the issue of the lists and silver badges in September 1916.

The Leicestershire Regiment and Leicestershire Yeomanry entries are found under Lichfield Unit. Besides the surname and forename(s) also included are the rank, regimental number, silver war badge number, date of discharge and date of enlistment. Most indicate service in the ‘Leicesters’ or ‘Leicestershire Yeomanry’ but some entries give the battalion number. Also, usefully the records show the reason for discharge (usually wounds or sickness) and whether service was home or abroad.

The three indexes contain the same information but in appropriate order for each index.
