This index is made up of 7557 names from the Leicestershire and Rutland newspapers. It covers the period from 4th August 1915 to 31st December 1919. The ‘In Memoriam’ notices were placed in the newspapers by relatives, friends and colleagues of deceased men who died during World War 1, usually one year after death but in many instances two, three or four years afterwards.

The index consists of:

  • date and name of newspaper,
  • surname of deceased,
  • forename of deceased and abode (if given),
  • rank and regiment, ship or other information (if given),
  • date and year of death,
  • relatives, friends or colleague details as in the newspapers, plus their abode (if given).

Most information is taken from the Leicester Daily Mercury, but other local newspapers included are the Coalville Advertiser, Loughborough Echo, Melton Times, Leicester Mail, Illustrated Leicester Chronicle, Melton Mowbray Mercury (with) Oakham & Uppingham News.
