This dataset contains an index of all Leicestershire and Rutland Probate Records that have been indexed in the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland (ROLLR), Northamptonshire Record Office & Lincolnshire Archives.
I have been checking all original Probate Records in the ROLLR from the first dated record in 1495 to ensure that they agree with the Indexes and amending the Indexes where necessary. The Archdeaconry Court and Peculiar Courts records on Leicestershire Wills 1 file up to 1749 are now complete.
On Leicestershire Wills 1 are the names of all Leicestershire people who are mentioned in Wills, Administrations, Inventories, Executor Bonds, Guardianship Bonds, Probate Act Books and Administration Act Books and the many Indexes to those records. The original documents and indices are the copyright of the ROLLR, the Northamptonshire Record Office and Lincolnshire Archives, but the information on this CD is the copyright of me Mick Rawle as I collated it and put it into the format you see it in today. Once again, my thanks to the staff of the three Record Offices who have assisted me when required as I was compiling this enhanced Index, but especially to the staff of the ROLLR who have allowed me unrestricted access to the thousands of ancient original Probate Records.
I make no claim that this is a complete list of all the wills, administrations, inventories and other probate documents for Leicestershire and Rutland, but it is as complete and correct as I can make it, having now seen over 150,000 original records and indexes up to 1800 and beyond. I have added all probate records relating to all the Peculiar Courts in addition to the Archdeaconry Court, the Consistory Court & Vicar General Court.
My next task is to work on Leicestershire Wills 2 File and carry on to the end of the Archdeaconry Records in 1857 which will probably take me more than 2 years to complete. This file covers the Archdeaconry Wills and goes up to 1858 when the National Probate Index was started.
