This CD is for the Leicester School Age Registers which run from 1878-1923 with D.O.B.s from 1863-1909, and cover 4 volumes. This index gives the pupils name and date of birth. Not included in the index but given in the register are the parents’ names and their residence. Also in volume one the mothers’ maiden name may be given. There are just over 93,000 names in this index.

The registers are the records of children leaving school in the Borough of Leicester, which later became the City of Leicester, that were part of the Leicester School Board and later the Leicester Education Committee. There are two sets of entries on this CD – the first set of school leaving dates for children is from 1892 to 1920 and is split into 2 files – A to K and L to Z. The second set of school leaving dates for children is from 1920 to 1935 and is in one file for all surnames.

Included in the index are the voter’s abodes if different to their voting qualification addresses, a description of their qualification (such as house, land and whether freehold), together with various notes such as farm names, pubs, mills and manor houses etc.

This index is made up of 7557 names from the Leicestershire and Rutland newspapers. It covers the period from 4th August 1915 to 31st December 1919. The ‘In Memoriam’ notices were placed in the newspapers by relatives, friends and colleagues of deceased men who died during World War 1, usually one year after death but in many instances two, three or four years afterwards.

This dataset contains a surname index of the Leicestershire Electoral Registers for the year 1931. Numbers amounted to 198,749 in the four Divisions of Leicestershire at that time. It includes the women voters who became eligible to vote under the terms of the Representation of the People Act, 1928. Both men and women aged over 21 qualified as voters in Parliamentary Elections.

Finding marriages of nonconformists after the start of Civil Registration has never been easy. Some registers are in County Record Offices, but many are not. Below is an account of the history of marriage registers after 1837 to try to explain the reasons for this. At the start of Civil Registration in July 1837, marriage registers were issued to the Anglican, Quaker and Jewish places of worship only. Any non-conformist places of worship, (eg. The 1939/40 surname index probably includes people already in the forces. The Electoral Registers (including a separate section of Absent Voters) were dated 15 October 1939, the information being collected August 1939. There were a total of 1,227 Absent Voters in the City and County so these have been amalgamated into one index including the full address/village/town/city. The 1945/46 surname index includes everyone working away from home whether in the Army, Navy, RAF or some other form of war work.

The cemetery opened in 1849 and is now used only when families still own plots with space. The cemetery is in two parts. One is consecrated for Church of England burials. The other is referred to as Unconsecrated and is used for all burials other than those in consecrated ground.
